Cotton & Warterfield March Winds

The Cotton & Warterfield March Winds Regatta is held on the first full weekend in March, and bears the name of Charley Warterfield, who died unexpectedly in December, 1998, and Dr. Bob Cotton, who died in January 2015.  Charley Warterfield was a remarkably talented architect and sailor served as our Commodore in 1983.  Dr. Bob Cotton, an equally talented neonatal physician and professor, followed Charley as Commodore in 1984.  Together, they reflected on the fact that our club had no organized sailing event during the very month of the year most noted for wind.  The Board of Governors responded favorably to their proposal to establish the March Winds Regatta as a permanent cruising class sailing event to be held as a two day regatta early in March.  Since the inaugural March Winds Regatta (won by Chuck Konesky), the tradition has continued that the retiring commodore take responsibility for serving as regatta chairman for the event.  In 2014 the regatta was pared to a single day event.  In 2017, the regatta name was amended to include Dr. Bob Cotton's name in the memorial title.  The March Winds is a PHRF cruising regatta with 4 fleets: Heavy A, Heavy B, Light, and C fleet (main and jib only).
