Commodore's Scuttlebutt June 14, 2019

Sail camp has begun. Be aware that the power will be turned off at all docks while campers are present. Sprung dock boards on the courtesy dock have been replaced or reattached. Thank Todd Malone, Steve Vague, Howard Toole, and Joe Hagan for donating an evening of their time to make these needed repairs. If you notice additional repairs that are required there is some lumber beside the Bruce Campbell Memorial Race Committee storage building and some fasteners inside. Feel free to step up.
Yazoo Summer Regatta
Saturday June 15th

This year we will again have the "Yazoo" Summer Regatta tomorrow, June 15. To make the race fun and relaxed, we are going to use a pursuit start. Yep, no committee boat, no worrying about other boats on the start line and no worrying about count down timers and horns. Just look at your start time after the official start at 11:25 AM in the Pursuit Start Times attached.  Then all you do is finish the race (the race committee will be at the finish line to record the order of finish). That way you know exactly where you finished and can go to the clubhouse for a cool one. The 8 mile or 5 mile course will be decided the morning of the event.
9:30 am: Registration, 10:30 am: Skippers’ Meeting
12:00 pm: starting times begin
Note: this is a little different than I posted last week.
Trophy Presentation after race
Registration fee $0, zip, zero, nada, the null set

We still need a PRO for the McDougal in the Fall. Contact Jim Doran to volunteer.

HIYC Sail Camp – Cognizant Adult
We have had overwhelming success at HIYC’s Sail Camp the first two weeks. So far, we've had 77 regular campers and nearly a dozen "In Training" teenagers starting the journey to become counselors. Not to mention the dozen or so counselors who were former campers themselves that are teaching these children.  I cannot thank you, the members of HIYC enough for allowing us to expose these children and young adults to our mutual sport and pastime. On behalf of the Nashville Sailing Foundations director Paul Latour and the NSF Board comprised of Mary Ann Smokler, Nelson Miller, Jan Mattix, Rear Commodore Gene Lovelace and myself, I'd like to especially thank all those members who so graciously gave their time this week to serve as a Cognizant Adult.

After speaking with our camp operator (and HIYC member) Laura Johnson and our Camp Director (our newest HIYC member) Kim Rafferty, we have concluded we’d like to continue with having HIYC members serve as cognizant Adults for the remaining two weeks of sail camp at HIYC. They have informed me the most valuable time to have a volunteer is in the mornings, 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM. If you are able and willing to come out to the club and hang out for a few hours in the next two weeks, we'd love the opportunity to show you what we're doing, and have you help out.
