1.       INVITATION - Harbor Island Yacht Club cordially invites you and your crew to attend the Arnold Nye Team Race Regatta on November 15 & 16, 2008 on Old Hickory Lake, TN

2.       RULES

3.1.    The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined by The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) 2005-2008, the Prescriptions of US SAILING, the Sailing Instructions and any posted modifications.

3.2.    Changes to the following RRS sections will be made for this regatta: 28.1 (Recalls), 35 (Time Limit), 46 (Membership), 61.1(a) (Protest Notice), 62.1(a) (Redress), A2 (Scoring), A4.1 (Scoring). The changes appear in full in the Sailing Instructions. This notice is given to satisfy J1.2(1).

4.       SAILING INSTRUCTIONS - The Sailing Instructions will be available at registration and at www.hiyc.org.

5.       ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY –

5.1     The regatta will be open to cruising boats properly registered with HIYC. (RRS 46 will not apply.) Participants may enter the race by completing registration at the table in the HIYC clubhouse before the skippers' meeting.

5.2     Each boat must have an established PHRF rating that has been assigned by the HIYC-PHRF Committee. If your boat is not listed on the HIYC Ratings List, a PHRF rating, will be assigned by the Race Committee.

6.       TEAMS

6.1     Participants will compete as members of three- or four-boat teams.

6.2     (a) The race committee will select teams of boats and skippers with similar PHRF ratings and past performance characteristics after registration is complete, prior to the skippers' meeting.
(b) If each team has 4 boats, all 4 boats' scores will count toward that team's overall point total for the race. If one or more teams have only 3 boats, each team's top 3 boats' scores for each race will count toward that team's overall point total for that race.
(c) The boats defined in (a) and (b) above will be designated as “Counting Boats”

6.3     Teams will be designated by a color. Each boat must display a ribbon of that color (supplied at the skippers' meeting) from its backstay.

6.4     There will be a single start for all participants in each race.

7.       FEES

7.1.    The registration fee is $30.00 for the Regatta. Checks made out to HIYC Racing are much preferred to cash.

7.2.    The Lobster Boil Dinner will be served on Saturday evening. See the separate notice for pre-ordering this meal and cost.

8.       RACE COURSE

8.1     A "river course" will be set between the dam and a point about half a mile upstream of Lindsley's Light with the starting line set as close to the area outside the harbor as wind direction permits.

8.2     Race courses set outside the harbor on Old Hickory Lake intersect the navigational channel. Commercial traffic (e.g., barges) and deep-draft craft in the channel have right-of-way over sailboats and must be treated with utmost respect. When a boat sailing under these rules meets a vessel that is not, the rules of Part 2 (When Boats Meet) are replaced by the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCAS). An alleged breach shall be grounds for a protest by the race committee or the protest committee.

9.       RACING

9.1.    One race per day will be sailed..

9.2.    One race will constitute a series.

9.3.    No races will be started in less than three (3) knots of sustained wind as determined by the Race Committee.

9.4.    No race will be started after 1:00pm on Sunday.

11.     ALTERNATE PENALTY - A boat that may have infringed a rule of Part 2 while racing under spinnaker may exonerate herself by dousing her spinnaker (bringing the head of the spinnaker to a point below the level of the gooseneck), making a 360 degree turn including a tack and a gybe, and then resetting her spinnaker. This changes RRS 44.2.

12.     SCORING

12.1.   The Low Point System of RRS Appendix A will apply, as modified in the Sailing Instructions. All races will be scored (no throw-out).

12.2.   The overall team score will be determined as stated in the Sailing Instructions.
